Biography

Biography
Dr. Peninah Kitili is a distinguished Consultant Paediatrician, Dermatologist, and Venereologist with extensive experience in clinical practice, research, and medical education. She earned her undergraduate and Master’s degrees in Paediatrics from the University of Nairobi (1978–1984 and 1987–1990, respectively). To further specialize, she pursued a Diploma in Dermatology and Venereology at the University of Vienna, Austria, in 1994–1995. Dr. Kitili served at Kenyatta National, Referral, and Teaching Hospital for an impressive 33 years, retiring in October 2017. She worked as both a Consultant Paediatrician and Dermatologist, becoming Kenya’s only specialist in both fields since 1995, with one more expected to join soon.

From 2002 to 2010, she was the Head of the Department of Dermatology at the national hospital. Between 2004 and 2012, Dr. Kitili played a pivotal role as a member of the Ethics and Research Committee, guiding over 500 undergraduate and postgraduate students in their research. Additionally, she contributed to the development of the first strategic research plan for the University of Nairobi. Since 2008, she has served as a board member of the American Vitiligo Research Foundation (Medical Advisory Committee). Dr. Kitili is also a member of the Technical Committee on Cosmetics and Related Products at the Kenya Bureau of Standards, actively involved in the harmonization of standards across East African countries.

Her professional affiliations include the Kenya Association of Dermatologists, Kenya Paediatric Association, African Society of Dermatology and Venereology, and the European Society of Paediatric Dermatology. Currently, she runs a full-time private practice at Nairobi Hospital. Dr. Kitili has also contributed her expertise by writing dermatology chapters in two key healthcare guideline books:

  1. Guidelines for Treatment in Healthcare Facilities for the Ministry of Health, Kenya
  2. Guidelines for Treatment for Healthcare Centres for AMREF (African Medical Research and Evacuation Foundation)
Research Interest

Dr. Kitili’s research interests focus on Paediatrics, Dermatology, and Venereology, making her the only specialist in Kenya with expertise in all three fields since 1995. She is passionate about advancing healthcare standards, cosmetic safety regulations, and improving dermatological care in children.
